Interesting Penang

FACT 1



The 5th Prime Minister of Malaysia, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, in full Datukri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi  was born in Kampung Perlis, Bayan Lepas Penang. He was handpicked to succeed Malaysia's ruler of two decades, Mahathir Mohamad, when he stepped down in October 2003. 



FACT 2

Penang Free School
is the oldest  English school in Southeast Asia, founded by Rev. Sparke Hutchings in 1816.




FACT 3

Penang population currently stood at about 1.5 million. It's the only state in Malaysia
where ethnic Chinese forms the majority.

  • Ethnic Indian: 9.9%
  • Others: 6.5%






FACT 4 

International Dragon Boat Festival:
This colourful-friendly event is where teams from around the world flock to Penang 
for the Dragon Boat Festival that’s held each year in June in the waters off Batu Uban.




FACT 5


Penang was ruled by the Sultan of Kedah for centuries, until Captain Francis Light landed on the island's shores on behalf of the East India Company. In 1786, Light managed to acquire possession of the island of Penang and a small strip of the mainland opposite the island, where Butterworth stands today. He promised the local Sultan protection against invading forces, and renamed the island as Prince of Wales Island to commemorate the occasion of the Prince's birthday.
